A Story That Began in the 12th Century

Zbiroh Castle, the oldest noble residence in the Czech Republic, boasts a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the 12th century. Over the centuries, it has served as the residence of some of the most renowned monarchs and historical figures, including Ottokar II of Bohemia, Charles IV, and Rudolf II. In the 19th century, the castle was owned by Baron Strousberg, also known as the “Railway King,” who was one of the most prominent industrialists in Europe at the time. At the beginning of the 20th century, the celebrated artist Alphonse Mucha made the castle his home, where he created his masterpiece, The Slav Epic. Mucha, who held the title of Grand Commander of the Freemasons, also hosted mysterious gatherings of Freemasons from across Europe there.

The 20th century brought darker times for the castle. It was confiscated by the Nazi regime and served as an SS headquarters. Later, during the communist era, it was converted into military barracks and fell into severe disrepair. Once a symbol of grandeur, the castle became nearly a ruin, desperately in need of restoration.

Since 2004, Zbiroh Castle has been privately owned and operated as a family enterprise. Thanks to dedicated efforts, it has gradually been restored to its former beauty and spirit.
